inflatable-camping-air-mattress-with-40d-nylon-shell-and-carry-sack
Inflatable Camping Air Mattress with 40D Nylon Shell and Carry Sack

A sleeping pad that puts 2.4 inches of air between you and whatever you pitched the tent on. It blows up with your own breath, it rolls back down to the size of a water bottle, and it weighs a pound and a bit.

No pump. No batteries. No foam roll strapped to the outside of your bag.

It was the ground that woke you up, not the sleeping bag

Most people blame the bag, and it is almost never the bag. A sleeping bag insulates and cushions nothing, so every stone and root under the groundsheet arrives straight into your hip and your shoulder. By two in the morning you have turned over so many times that you are simply awake. This puts 2.4 inches of air in the way. The ground is still uneven underneath. You stop being woken by it.

Look at the surface and you can see how that thickness is held. The top sheet is welded to the bottom sheet on a diamond grid, so the pad rises into a field of small square cushions and stays flat across the whole 75 inches. An unbaffled airbed has nothing holding its two faces together, which is why it swells into a barrel in the middle and tips you gently toward the edge all night.

One valve, and your own lungs

The valve sits at a corner. Open it, blow into it, shut it, and you are done — no pump to carry, no batteries to remember and nothing to leave behind in the car. On a wet hillside at dusk that matters more than it sounds, because the pump you forgot is the pump you sleep without.

Letting the air out works the same way round. Open the valve at the corner, start rolling from the far end, and the air runs out ahead of the roll. It goes back into the drawstring sack it came in, which is cut from the same nylon in the same color, so whichever one you pick the sack matches it.

Why not the cheap foam roll, or the cheap airbed

A closed cell foam mat costs less, and it never gets any smaller than it already is, so it lives strapped to the outside of your pack looking like a bedroll from 1978. It is also about half an inch thick. On stony ground that is not really a pad.

The flocked airbed at the other end of the shelf has the opposite problem. It is one large open chamber, it takes a pump you then have to carry, and it packs down no better than a rolled coat.

This one sits between them. The shell is 40D nylon and the bed is 2.4 inches deep, and it still rolls down to 7.9 inches by 3.5 for 1.2 pounds. That is small enough to travel inside the pack instead of swinging off the back of it. Pitch late, blow it up in the dark, and the first thing you notice in the morning is that you do not remember waking up.

Specifications

Dimensions inflated: 74.8 x 23.6 x 2.4 in (190 x 60 x 6 cm)

Packed size: 7.9 x 3.5 in (20 x 9 cm)

Weight: 1.2 lb (531 g)

Shell material: 40D nylon

Load rating: 441 lb (200 kg)

Sleeps: One adult

Surface: Welded diamond cell lattice across the full top face

Inflation: By mouth, through a single valve at one corner

Deflation: Through the same valve

Pump: None supplied, and none is needed

Not self-inflating: There is no foam core, so it does not expand on its own when the valve is opened

Storage: Rolls into the supplied drawstring sack, which is the same nylon in the same color as the air mattress, on every colorway

Colors: Blue, Orange, Gray, Green, Camouflage

Not insulated: This is an air pad with no insulating layer and no stated R-value, so on cold ground it is worth putting something under it

Package Includes

1x Inflatable Camping Air Mattress

1x Drawstring Carry Sack, in the same color as the air mattress

https://ridgewellliving.com/en-au/products/inflatable-camping-air-mattress-with-40d-nylon-shell-and-carry-sack
