skull-knife-block-for-six-knives-resin-with-a-rounded-non-slip-base
Skull Knife Block for Six Knives, Resin with a Rounded Non Slip Base

A molded resin skull, hand-painted to mimic aged bone, sitting nose-down on a rounded slab with six knives standing up out of its head. Handles fanned, blades gone. It is a Halloween piece that happens to be where the knives live.

No printed card. No foam pumpkin. No bag of cobwebs that comes out of the box already gray. Set it on the counter and load it.

Most of what goes up in October only takes up a surface

Think about what the season is usually made of. A foam pumpkin, vacuum-formed plastic with a seam down the back, a garland that goes up in an hour and then does nothing for the next five weeks. Every piece of it costs you a surface, which is why the decorating usually stops before it reaches the kitchen.

This is the one that earns a place on the counter. It is a gothic object first, cast and painted to be looked at, and then, without being asked, the thing your knives stand in for the month.

From the doorway it reads as old bone, and it is paint

The detail is molded into the resin rather than printed onto it, so the eye sockets are real hollows and the teeth are separate teeth with shadow between them. Over that goes a hand-painted vintage finish made to mimic aged bone, a warm cream that turns brown wherever the surface dips. The sockets, the nasal opening, the tooth gaps and the long crack down from the crown hold the darker color, while everything raised stays pale.

That trick is what makes a molded object read as an old one from across the room. Up close there is a suture line worked across the back of the crown. Satin, not gloss.

On the night, it holds the middle of the food table

Halloween is the one evening when the kitchen is the party, and somebody still has to cut the bread and portion the cake. A bowl of sweets decorates that table and does nothing once the food is out.

Put the skull in the middle instead, six handles standing out of its head, and guests take a knife and push it back in all evening. It is the centerpiece and it is where the knives return, so nothing ends up lying across the cheese board with a blade pointing at somebody.

Six slots through the crown, and nothing shifts when you pull a knife out

The slots are cut clean through the shell and the crown behind them is hollow, so a blade goes in and disappears. Each one is set at its own angle rather than in a neat row, which is why the handles come out of the head in a fan, and why six knives of six different lengths stand in it without leaning on one another. The knives in the photographs are not included, and what arrives is the skull, ready for the six you already own.

The base is a rounded slab, pale across its face and rough and irregular round the rim, molded and painted in the same resin as the head. Underneath it carries four non-slip pads, and those pads are the reason it stays put when you draw a blade back out of the crown.

At 5.9 inches tall it sits on a counter rather than needing a shelf cleared for it. In November it goes back in the box with the season. Or it stays out, if a skull on the counter is simply how your kitchen looks.

Specifications

Dimensions: 5.9 in high (15 cm)

Material: Resin, base included

Base: A rounded slab with a rough irregular rim and a pale face, molded and painted in the same resin

Base underside: Four non-slip pads

Finish: Hand-painted.
