No scraping round the bottom with a finger. Nothing left clinging where you cannot reach it. Set the dial, fill it, and turn.

You already know how a measuring cup works. Tipping it up is the problem

Honey. Peanut butter. Syrup, tahini, condensed milk. Anything worth measuring properly is the thing that will not come out.

You tip the cup and about half of it moves. The rest lies on the floor of the cup in a slick that will not pour. So you find a spatula and scrape round the inside, and you still leave a coating behind. The recipe is short by a spoonful and nobody can say by how much.

Then the cup goes in the sink sticky. It is always the last thing you wash.

The plate inside does the emptying

A small black knob sits on top of the handle. The settings are printed down the handle below it: 1 cup, a half, a third, a quarter, 0 and clean.

Turn the knob to the measure you want and the plate inside moves to set it. A soft black seal runs around the edge of that plate, so it meets the wall with nothing to creep past.

Fill it, hold it over the bowl and turn the knob the rest of the way. The plate travels up the cup and pushes the whole lot out of the mouth. Thick things leave in one piece instead of in a smear.

Why the jug in your cupboard makes you scrape

An ordinary measuring jug is a wall and a floor. Nothing in it moves, so whatever clings stays clinging. That is fine for water and no use at all for anything thick.

A set of nested cups is the other answer in most kitchens. That is four or five separate pieces to wash, store and lose. You still scrape each one out with a finger.

This is one cup across the whole range, with the part that empties it built in.

Milliliters up one side, ounces up the other

A single red rule runs up the front of the cup. Milliliters are numbered to the right of it at 50, 100, 150 and 200, with shorter marks in between. Fluid ounces are numbered to the left at 2, 4 and 6. Full, it holds 250 ml, and that is the one cup printed low on the front.

It is low and wide rather than tall, so it lies down in a drawer instead of taking a shelf. It goes in the dishwasher. Keep it out of the microwave.

Measure it once, and all of it goes in the bowl.

Specifications

Dimensions: 4.7 x 3.1 x 2.6 in (12 x 8 x 6.5 cm)

Capacity: 250 ml, marked on the cup as 1 cup

Material: BPA-free plastic

Color: Clear, with a black knob, handle band and seal

Scale: Printed in red, milliliters numbered to 200 and fluid ounces numbered to 6

Graduations: 25 ml

Dial settings: 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/3 cup, 1/4 cup, 0 and clean

Handle: Closed loop, with the knob on top

Spout: Angled pouring lip, opposite the handle

Suitable for: Liquids and dry ingredients

Care: Dishwasher safe.
