A curtain of Christmas lights with ten clear globes hanging from it, and inside every globe sits a small winter scene: a Santa, a snowman or a little tree, set in white beads like fresh snow with a pine cone and a few red berries beside it. Hang it along a curtain pole or across the mantel, plug it into a USB port, and each globe glows warm white from the inside.
No batteries to change. No glass to worry about. No bare bulbs glaring out at the street.
Ten little scenes, lit from the inside
Most string lights are points of light and nothing else, so they look much the same in every house on the street. Here the light sits inside the scene. A fine coil of wire carrying tiny LEDs loops around the inside of each globe. When it comes on, the beads, the figure and the berries all catch the glow, so every globe reads as its own small lantern rather than a bulb.
The globes are clear ABS plastic, not glass, with a white cap on top where the wire goes in. Switched off in the daytime, they still look like ten tiny snow scenes hanging in the window. In the evening, the whole curtain becomes a soft warm glow you notice from across the room.
Santa, Snowman or Tree
The only difference between the three is the figure inside the globes, and all ten on a string carry the same one. Santa is the classic choice, red and white, and it brings the most color to a window. Snowman is whiter and a little quieter, with just the black hat and red scarf to pick it out. Tree is the calmest of the three, a small green tree with a red bow, and it suits a living room where you would rather not have characters on show.
How it hangs, and how it switches on
The top line is 118 inches long, and the ten globes hang from it on drops of two lengths, alternating long and short. That sets them in two staggered rows just below the line, which looks deliberate on a curtain pole, along the front of a mantel shelf or over a headboard.
It runs from a USB plug, so a phone charger, a power bank or the USB port on a TV will light it, and there are no batteries to replace halfway through the season. A button on the plug moves through eight lighting modes, from steady and a slow fade to twinkle, wave and flash. Keep it indoors, put it up once, and every evening the window does the rest.
