Most bags that look this good are a nuisance to use, and most bags that are easy to use look like sports kit. This one is waxed cotton canvas with a brown leather flap over the mouth, 23 liters inside and a padded sleeve down the back wall for a laptop. It lives on the hook by the door and comes off it every morning.

The buckles are set once, and magnets do the rest

Two leather straps run down the front through squared metal roller buckles, which on most bags of this shape means unthreading both every time you want your keys. Under each strap tab here sits a magnetic snap, so you buckle the strap once to the length you like and then leave it alone for good.

After that the tab lifts off the magnet with one finger and clicks back on by itself when you let it drop. Two seconds, one hand, standing up. The front of the bag still looks like it takes a minute to open, which is the whole trick. Both lower pockets and both side pockets work the same way, so the six buckles on the front are doing far less work than they appear to.

What twenty three liters actually holds

A day, comfortably. The quilted sleeve stands against the back wall with a strap across its mouth, and in front of it there is room for a folded jacket, a hardback, lunch and a flask. The drawstring pulls the mouth shut, the leather flap drops over the top, and anything sticking up above the collar just raises the flap rather than stopping it closing.

Rain, and what waxed cotton really does

Water beads on this fabric and rolls straight off it. Riders and fishermen carried the stuff for a century before nylon existed, and this is exactly why. Drizzle sits on the surface in beads until you brush it away, a shower runs off the leather flap, and the cotton underneath stays dry. That is what the wax is for. It sheds weather rather than sealing against it, so the drawstring mouth and the stitched seams are where a long soak would eventually find its way in.

The wax also does the thing this material is loved for. Every fold goes slightly pale, so the panels slowly fill up with a map of how you carry it, and the leather darkens alongside. All six look even and factory fresh today, and a year from now yours will not look like anybody else's.
