Most Halloween decorating happens at eye level, on a mantel, along a porch rail or down the middle of a table, while the ceiling above it all stays a plain white rectangle. This light uses that space. Bend the gooseneck until the lens points where you want the picture, and the scene lands overhead in red, large enough to be the first thing anyone sees when they walk in.

It is at its best in a dark room. The farther away the ceiling or wall, the larger the picture grows. How crisp it looks depends on that distance and on the surface it falls on, so a few minutes of moving it around finds the spot that suits your room.

Six scenes in the box, and a new one is a disc away

Each disc carries one scene: a grinning jack-o'-lantern, a ghost, a hooded grim reaper with his scythe, a swarm of bats, a skull and a spider on its web. Change the disc and the ceiling changes with it.

That makes one small light work in more than one room and more than one mood. The ghost suits a bedroom on an ordinary evening in the run-up to Halloween, while the skull or the reaper earns its place over the drinks table on the night of the party. Every scene is projected in red.

Powered by whatever USB port is nearest

There is no battery to charge and no app, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to set up. The USB plug sits on the end of the gooseneck, so it goes straight into a laptop, a power bank or a USB wall adapter, and the neck holds the head at whatever angle you bend it to. The adapter and the power bank are not included, though an old phone charger with a full-size USB port will do the job.

At 2.95 by 1.38 inches the head is about the size of a small flashlight. When the season is over it goes back in a drawer with its six discs, and next year the ceiling is ready again in the time it takes to find a USB port.
