A wooden alarm clock with digits big enough to read from the pillow, and the other things you check first thing set neatly beside them: the alarm time, the month and date, and the temperature in the room. Touch the bar along the top and the screen lights up for a few seconds, then settles back down.
No glow left burning all night. No phone to unlock just to see the time. No cable running to the wall.
One glance, four answers
The time takes up most of the screen, in tall black digits you can read from across the bed. Down the right-hand side sit three smaller windows, stacked and labeled: the alarm you have set, so you know it is on before you turn over; the month and date; and the indoor temperature.
The time runs in 12 or 24 hour format, whichever you are used to, and the temperature reads in Fahrenheit or Celsius. It covers anything from 16 to 122°F, which is more than any bedroom, study or kitchen will ask of it.
Dark until you reach for it
Most bedside clocks glow all night, whether anyone is looking at them or not. This one stays unlit until you want it. Tap the brown bar on top and the screen turns a soft, even white for about five seconds, long enough to read the time, and then goes dark again so the room does too.
That same bar is the snooze. When the alarm sounds, one touch on it gives you another five minutes, so there is no hunting for a small button with your eyes half shut. Setting the time, the date and the alarm happens with the buttons and switches on the back, out of the way.
A wood case, in two shades
The case is wood with softly rounded edges, closer to a small piece of furniture than to the plastic box most alarm clocks come in. From the front both versions show the same pale wood frame around the screen. The difference is the body behind it.
Brown sets that pale frame against a darker, reddish-brown wood on the top and sides, and looks at home beside walnut, leather and darker furniture. Beige is pale wood all the way round, which suits oak, white walls and lighter rooms.
At 5.4 inches wide and 3.1 inches tall it is a little shorter than a coffee mug, so it fits a narrow nightstand, a desk or a bookshelf without crowding anything. It runs on three AAA batteries, with no cable to plug in, so it can sit wherever you can see it best.
Set the alarm once, and every morning starts with the time, the date and the temperature in one look.
