A skeleton hand, severed at the wrist and about eight inches at its longest, that glows from inside the bone and walks across the floor on its fingertips. Clap near it and it starts.

No cable. No remote to lose. Three AAA cells go in the back, you slide a switch with your thumb, and you put it down.

Everything else you put out just sits there

Think about what a Halloween hallway is actually made of. A carved pumpkin on the step, a bag of stretched cobweb over the banister, a few paper bats on the glass, and not one of those things has moved since the afternoon you put it down. People see it, register that you made an effort, and carry on walking.

The thing anybody actually remembers from a Halloween night is the thing that moved when they were not expecting it to. That is a much smaller category than it sounds. Most of what is in it needs a socket, a stand, and somewhere to hide the cable.

It listens, and then it comes at you

Switch it on, put it on the floor, and from then on it waits. A clap sets it off, a shout sets it off, and a hand laid on the back of it sets it off. What it does not have is a sensor watching the doorway. That turns out to be the better way round.

Nothing has to walk through a beam and nothing has to be standing in front of it. So it goes off from around a corner, from under a chair, or from the dark side of a room where nobody is looking. Someone shrieks at the front door and the hand starts moving in the room behind them. Three things happen at once when it goes: the fingers carry it forward, the sound effects play, and the whole hand stays lit the entire time.

The bone is what glows, not a bulb behind it

Most light-up Halloween props are an opaque shell with a lamp rattling around inside and a couple of holes cut to let it out. This one is molded in latex, which passes light, so the glow comes through the bone itself. It is brightest at the knuckles and down inside each fingertip, softening across the back of the hand in a warm amber rather than a cold white. There is enough of it to lay a pool of light on the floor around the fingers.

The wrist stays dark, and that is the detail that does the work. The torn stump above the wrist is a deeper tan and does not light at all, so what you see down an unlit hallway is a glowing hand with a black ragged end where the rest of the arm ought to be.

Switched off in daylight it still holds up. The body is a matte bone cream with a brown wash rubbed into every joint line and every groove between the bones, so the raised surfaces stay pale and the hollows go dark. It reads as an object rather than a toy, and that is what lets it sit out on a shelf through October instead of coming out for one evening.
