A white ghost sits on a wooden swing between two ropes wrapped in red and orange maple leaves, with warm lights threaded all the way up through them. Hang it from a porch beam or a strong branch, and once it gets dark the ghost glows from inside and the leaves light up around it.
No plug to find. No cable across the path. No climbing up to switch it on.
Most Halloween ghosts are flat against a door
Walk down any street in the last week of October and most of the ghosts you pass are flat. A printed sheet taped inside a window, a cutout pinned to the front door, or an inflatable that sags every afternoon and needs a socket and a fan to stand back up again. They tell people the house is taking part, and they give nobody a reason to stop at the bottom of the path.
A ghost that hangs in the air has space all around it. This one sits on its seat under a porch roof or below a branch, so people coming up the path see it from the side as well as the front. It reads as a figure rather than a picture of one.
The leaves are lit, not only the ghost
Most light-up ghosts are one glowing shape. On this one the lights run the full length of both ropes, tucked in among artificial maple leaves in deep red, orange and gold, so the whole swing glows, not just the figure. The ghost is sheer white fabric flecked with tiny specks, and lit from inside it turns a soft candle yellow with two dark oval eyes near the top.
The leaves do something the ghost cannot. They make it an autumn piece as much as a Halloween one, which is why it looks at home above a step full of pumpkins in the middle of October.
A remote, because it hangs out of reach
A swing looks best hung high, from a porch beam, a hook in the ceiling or a branch above head height, which is exactly where you do not want to reach every evening. The lights run on three AA batteries in a small battery box on the rope. The remote switches them on and off from the ground.
It also carries a timer button, eight light modes and brightness up and down. The coin battery for the remote comes in the box, so only the three AA batteries are yours to find.
Hang it anywhere with something strong above
Two S-hooks for the ropes come with it, along with three adhesive hooks and a sheet of double-sided tape for surfaces you would rather not drill into. On a covered porch it greets whoever comes up the path, from a tree it hangs over the lawn, and indoors it works from a ceiling hook in a hallway or beside a fireplace. Outside, keep the battery box out of direct rain, and make sure whatever it hangs from will take the weight of the seat.
It comes in three hanging lengths, 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8 meters. The shortest is the one for a doorway or a hallway ceiling, and the two longer ones suit a high porch roof or a tall branch with more drop to fill.
Put it up at the start of October and it does the work every evening until the first of November.
