Four colored glass tumblers, each one a different part of a koi fish: the head with its eyes, a section with the fins, a section of scales and the tail. Turn them upside down and stack them in order, and the four become one glass fish standing on the shelf.
Take it apart and you have four everyday glasses for water, iced tea or a pour of whiskey. Put it back together when you are done, and the set takes up the space of a single bottle.
Four different cups, and only together do they make the fish
Most matching sets are the same glass four times over. Here every cup has its own shape. The head is a tapered tumbler on a round foot, with a raised eye on each side. The fin cup has a ribbed fin standing out on either side of its scales, and the body cup is the slimmest of the four, covered in scales from the rim down to its step. The tail is a flared glass with deep vertical flutes, which is what gives the fish its tail fin when it stands at the bottom of the stack.
The scales are molded into the glass itself, in staggered rows of small fan shapes that catch the light as you turn the cup. Nothing is painted on and nothing is printed. The pattern is the glass.
How the four stack into one koi
Each of the three lower cups steps in to a narrower band near its base. Flip them over and each rim slips down over the band of the cup below, so the joins line up into one smooth body with a faint seam at each section.
The tail goes first, rim on the table, so its flutes flare out like a fin. The body cup goes on next, then the cup with the fins, and the head goes on top. Its foot becomes the fish's mouth, and the two eyes sit just below it, one on each side. Stacked, they stand on an open shelf as one piece instead of four.
Three colors, each with its own mood
Amber is a deep golden glass the color of whiskey or honey, and it glows when the sun comes through it. Gray is a smoky, see-through gray that suits a dark kitchen or a plain bar cart. Blue is a bright sky blue that looks best by a window, filled with cold water.
All three are the same four shapes, with the same relief, and each set comes in a single color. Whichever you choose, the koi is the thing people pick up and ask about.
