A vintage-style round seat cushion in soft velvet, quilted all over in small scallops and gathered in at the center under a single covered button, with a fringe of little pom-poms running all the way around its edge. Put it on a wooden dining chair and the hardest seat at the table becomes the one everybody reaches for first.
At 15.7 inches across, it sits comfortably on a chair seat or a stool. Drop it on the floor beside the coffee table, or stand it against the arm of the sofa when nobody needs the seat.
A hard chair gets a seat worth sitting on
Wooden chairs look good and start to feel hard long before the meal is over. The usual answer is a thin square pad that helps a little and does nothing for the room. This one is round, plump through the middle and covered in velvet, so you get a soft dome to sit into, and the chair gets something worth looking at once it is pushed back under the table.
The same cushion moves around the house with you. On the floor it becomes a low seat at the coffee table or a spot to sit by the fire. On an ottoman or a footstool it softens the top, and propped against a sofa arm or a headboard it reads as a round accent pillow.
Scallop quilting, a covered button and a pom-pom edge
Look closely and the surface has a lot going on. Fine stitching, in a thread a shade lighter than the cover, runs across the whole top in rows of small overlapping arcs like fish scales, and the velvet puffs up between the lines so every scallop catches the light. At the center a covered button draws the top in, and soft folds fan out from it toward the edge.
Around the side, a narrow braid sewn into the seam carries a row of small round pom-poms. The trim is not a single color. It changes as it goes around, in sections of deep green, wine red, dusty terracotta rose and olive, which gives the edge a collected, vintage look rather than a matched one.
Five deep velvet colors
Green is a deep bottle green that sits well with walnut, leather and brass. Mustard is a warm golden ochre that lifts a gray or navy sofa, and Gray is a quiet charcoal with a silvery sheen that settles into almost any room. Plum is a rich magenta plum, and Pink is a soft, dusty rose.
Every color carries the same mixed trim, so two or three different cushions look like they belong together on a bench, along a window seat or stacked beside the sofa. Give the hard chair in your kitchen a seat you will actually want to sit on.
