Cardboard was never meant for the garage

A cardboard file box does fine on an office shelf, and then it moves somewhere colder. Damp gets into the corners, the lid gives way under whatever ends up stacked on it, and a spilled drink or a dripping pipe goes straight through to the folders. Ten years of records deserves better than that.

This box is plastic on every side, and the lid shuts down onto a soft grey seal that runs right round its rim. Four latches, two on each long side, flip up over the edge of the lid and hold it tight against that seal. Dust stays out, and a splash runs off the outside instead of soaking in. That makes it water-resistant: made for damp air and spills, not for sitting in standing water.

Hanging files go straight in

A ledge runs along the top of each long wall inside. The hooks of a standard hanging folder rest on it, so the folders hang in a neat row from the front of the box to the back. It takes letter and legal hanging files, which means the folders already in your desk drawer can move across as they are, tabs and labels included.

On the outside it measures 18 inches long, 14.5 inches wide and 10.9 inches tall, and it holds 32 quarts. There is room for a good run of household files, from old tax years and pay stubs to the receipts and paperwork for everything still under warranty.

Find the right box from across the room

The lid is clear and the walls are see-through, so the folder tabs and whatever you wrote on them show from the shelf. Put a row of them on a garage rack and you can pick out the box with the mortgage papers before you touch anything, then open four latches instead of every lid on the shelf.

The lid and the body are shaped to stack, so a second box can sit on top of the first instead of taking a shelf of its own. Clipped shut and put away, the records stay clean, flat and exactly where you left them.
