A long, narrow clear tray, 12.5 inches by 3 inches, that sits in a drawer and gives the long, thin things in it a lane of their own. Wooden spoons, a spatula, pens, a ruler, a razor: each one lies in a straight row where you can see it, and the next time you open the drawer it is still where you left it.
No rummaging. No spatula jammed across the back. No pen rolling to the far corner every time the drawer closes.
Long, thin things need a long, thin place to go
Most of what ends up loose in a kitchen or desk drawer is long and thin, and that is exactly the shape a cutlery insert or a square box was never made for. Pull the drawer hard once and everything slides into a pile at the back. A lane three inches wide keeps those things side by side and pointing the same way, so the one you want is on top instead of underneath.
At 12.5 inches long, it takes a wooden spoon lengthwise without the handle hanging over the end. Two or three of them side by side turn a wide drawer into neat rows, and each row keeps its own job.
Clear walls, a textured floor, nothing to work around
The walls are clear plastic, 4 millimeters thick, with a flat rim running all the way round the top edge. Because you can see straight through it, the drawer still looks like your drawer, and you can tell what is in each lane from above without lifting anything out.
The floor carries a fine raised diamond texture, and there are no dividers or clips to clean around. When it needs a wash, lift it out, wash it by hand and let it dry before it goes back.
The kitchen first, then every other drawer
In the kitchen it holds the long tools that never fit anywhere else. In a desk it lines up pens, pencils, a ruler and a pair of scissors. In the bathroom it keeps a razor, a comb and a toothbrush together in one place, and in a tool chest it gives screwdrivers a row of their own.
Each order is one tray, so a drawer takes as many as it has room for. Measure the inside of the drawer first: it needs 12.5 inches of depth or width for the length, and 3 inches of free space for every tray you lay side by side. After that, whatever you reach for is lying in a straight line, exactly where you put it.
