An antique gold vase in metal, made in two shapes: a tall, narrow trumpet on a footed stem, and a wider urn with scrolled handles and a raised crest on the front. Set either one on a mantel, a console or the middle of a dining table, and that surface has a centerpiece whether there is anything in it or not.

The finish is the reason to choose it: a warm, worn gold, darker in the recesses and brighter where the light catches it, so it never has the flat, even shine of a new gold vase.

A gold that looks lived with, not straight out of the box

Most gold vases are one smooth, uniform color from rim to foot, and next to wood, linen or old books they look like they arrived yesterday. This one is mottled. Deep brown shading runs through the gold, with brighter flecks where the surface rises, and the whole thing reads as aged rather than polished.

The detail follows the same idea. The urn's two handles are shaped as curling scrolls that rise just above the rim before sweeping down to the body, and a raised crest sits on the front between them. The trumpet keeps its body plain and lets the shape do the work. Both stand on a rounded knop and a stepped round foot, which lifts the vase off the surface the way a candlestick does.

Slim or Royal, and where each one sits

The Slim is the trumpet, and it is the taller of the two even though it looks lighter. It takes height without taking up much of the surface, so it works nicely at the end of a mantel, on a narrow console or a bedside table, and in a group of two or three objects. It is at its best with a few tall stems.

The Royal is shorter but far wider across its handles, with a wider mouth that takes a proper bunch. It suits the middle of a dining table, a console in the hall or the center of a sideboard, where one object has to hold the room on its own. Side by side at their two heights, the pair looks even better than either one alone.

Dried stems, fresh flowers or nothing at all

Dried pampas, wheat and bunny tails are the easy choice, because their pale tones sit beautifully against antique gold and never need replacing. Eucalyptus or olive branches bring green against the warm metal for a more relaxed look. Roses and peonies, in deep red or blush, give the Royal a full, traditional arrangement.

Left empty, it still earns its place. On the Royal the scrolls and the crest carry it, on the Slim the long flared line does, and in both the worn gold reads as a piece of sculpture rather than a container waiting to be filled.
