Shoes kicked off at the door end up in a drift, and the pair you want is always at the bottom of it. A rack fixes that by giving each pair its own spot on a shelf, toes out, so the whole lot reads like books on a bookcase. The shelves are 12 inches deep, about the length of a man's sneaker, so a pair sits right across from the back rail to the front with nothing hanging over the edge.

At 27 inches wide, each tier takes a row of everyday shoes side by side. The lowest shelf stands a few inches off the floor, which leaves room underneath for slides or a pair of flats.

Bamboo slats instead of wire or plastic

Most cheap racks are thin metal tubes or molded plastic, and they look like something borrowed from a garage. This one is bamboo, in a light natural honey tone with a fine straight grain, so it sits comfortably beside an oak floor, a painted baseboard or a wooden bench in the hall.

Each shelf is a frame of four rails filled with narrow slats that run from front to back. The gaps between them keep every shelf open, so the rack looks lighter than its size. Four square posts carry the shelves, and the whole rack is open on every side, so it never reads as a bulky piece of furniture.

Two tiers, three, or stack them higher

The 2 Tier is low and wide, a little lower than a coffee table, which suits a spot under a window, beneath a row of coat hooks or on the floor of a closet under hanging shirts. The 3 Tier adds a shelf and stands about knee height, for a hallway or a bedroom where more pairs need a home.

Both stack. The posts rise a little above the top shelf, and a second rack sits on them post to post. Two 2 Tier racks become four shelves, and a 2 Tier stacked with a 3 Tier makes five, without taking another inch of floor. Exact sizes for each combination are in the specifications.
