A cutting board in black walnut, made in two shapes and five sizes, so you can choose the board for the job instead of making one board do all of them. The paddles have a handle for carrying food to the table, the plain boards give you a clear flat surface for chopping, and every one has a hole cut through it for hanging on a hook.
A plastic board goes back in the cupboard after every use. Walnut is the kind of board you leave out, hung by the stove or leaning against the backsplash, ready the moment you need it.
A handle for the table, a flat board for the chopping
The two paddles are the serving boards. A rounded body narrows through two soft shoulders into a handle, so you can carry a loaf, a wedge of cheese or a few slices of cured sausage from the counter to the table in one hand and set it down in the middle of everyone. The hole in the end of the handle is where it hangs.
The three plain boards are the working boards. With no handle in the way, the whole surface is yours, from the small one you grab for a lemon or a single onion to the large one that takes the chopping for a whole dinner. The long board sits between the two jobs: narrow enough to carry a row of pastries down the table, and long enough to slice a baguette on.
Black walnut, with the grain left to show
Every board is black walnut, a deep chocolate-brown wood with lighter honey-colored streaks running through the grain, so no two boards look quite the same. The surface is sanded smooth with a soft, low sheen rather than a glossy coat.
The edges are rounded all the way around, which makes a board easy to pick up off a flat counter and comfortable in the hand that carries it. Hung up by its hole after washing, it takes no drawer space and dries in the open air.
Which of the five to pick
Choose a paddle if the board's main job is the table. The Small Paddle suits bread and a little cheese for two, while the Large Paddle has the wider body for a fuller spread. Choose a plain board if it is mainly for chopping. The Small Board is the quick one for a lime, a shallot or a handful of herbs, the Long Board works nicely for bread and long vegetables, and the Large Board is the one to cut a whole meal on. The exact sizes are in the specifications.
Whichever you pick, it comes off its hook, does the job and goes straight back up.
