A wall clock that looks like a sheet of paper crumpled in one hand and pressed flat against the wall, made in resin so every crease stays exactly where it fell. Two slim gold-toned hands sit in the middle of it, and that is all there is on the face.

No numbers. No second hand. No glass in front of it catching the light from the window.

Most wall clocks are a circle with twelve numbers on it

Look along the walls of most houses and the clock is the one thing nobody chose for its looks. It is a round frame with a printed dial behind glass, bought because the room needed the time on it somewhere, and it hangs there looking like an office. You notice it when you need it and ignore it the rest of the day.

This one works the other way round. From across the room it reads as a piece of wall art, a soft rippled square with a pair of hands on it, and only when you look for the time does it turn into a clock. The hands still point where they should, so you read it the way you read any clock with no numbers: roughly, and at a glance.

The crumpled surface is the whole design

The body is a single rough square of resin, a little over ten inches across, with a surface that dips and folds as if it had been creased by hand. The edges are not straight. They ripple along their length and no two sides match, which is what keeps it from looking like a tile.

The finish has a low sheen rather than a gloss, so the folds show up through light and shadow instead of reflections. With a window to one side the creases cast soft shadows across the face, and the whole thing changes a little through the day. The hands are two plain flat strips on a small round center cap, the longer one for minutes and the shorter one for hours, and it runs silently on a battery.

White or black, and what each one does to a wall

The White is a warm off-white rather than a bright one, so on a cream, stone or pale gray wall it sits almost tone on tone and the crumpled texture does all the talking. It suits a room that is already quiet, and it looks at home beside plaster, linen and pale wood.

The Black works nicely where you want the clock to be the thing you see first. Against a light wall it reads as a strong dark shape, and the gold-toned hands stand out much more clearly on it, which makes the time easier to read from the far side of a room. Over a black console or in a hallway with pale walls, it holds the whole wall on its own.

Either way, the wall stops looking like an office.
