A matcha kit that comes in two sizes. The four-piece set is everything that touches the tea: a tall glazed bowl with a pouring spout, a 100-prong bamboo whisk, the ceramic holder it dries on and a bamboo scoop. The seven-piece set adds a steel sifter, a small rest for the scoop and a printed cloth to lay it all out on.

Start small or start complete. Either way, the bowl you whisk in is the bowl you pour from.

A tall bowl gives the whisk room to work

Whisk matcha in a mug and the tines hit the sides before the tea ever foams, and in a wide cereal bowl it slops over the rim with every stroke. A matcha whisk needs room to move quickly from side to side, and walls high enough to keep the tea in the bowl while it does.

This bowl is built for exactly that. It stands three inches tall with straight sides, holds about 430 ml, and has a pinched spout on one side of the rim. Whisk the tea in it, then tip it and pour straight into a cup, or over milk and ice, with nothing to ladle out.

The inside is glazed a glossy dark brown, so the green of the matcha stands out against it. Underneath, the foot ring is left as pale bare clay.

Four pieces or seven, and what the extra three are for

The 4 Pieces set covers the method from scoop to cup. The bamboo scoop measures the powder, the 100-prong whisk turns it to foam, and the holder keeps the whisk standing head-down between uses, so the tines dry the way they were shaped instead of bending out of line in a drawer.

The 7 Pieces set adds the three things that make it tidier. Matcha packs into lumps in the tin, and the stainless steel sifter breaks them up before they reach the water. A small wire hook on its rim lets it rest across the bowl on its own. The scoop rest, shaped like a low ridge of hills, keeps the damp tip of the scoop off the counter. The coral fleece cloth soaks up drips and gives the whole set a place to live.

If you already own a fine tea strainer, the four-piece set will do everything you need. If you are starting from nothing, or buying for someone who is, the seven-piece set works nicely as the complete kit.

Three glazes, each with its own flecks

Only the bowl and the whisk holder change color, and they always come glazed to match. The whisk, the scoop and the extra pieces in the seven-piece set are the same whichever glaze you choose.

Beige is a warm stone color streaked with brown, and it suits pale wood and a light kitchen. Blue is a deep teal with dark flecks, the boldest of the three against a white counter. Yellow is a mustard that reads olive in low light, and it sits well beside walnut and dark stone. The glaze runs in faint horizontal lines and the flecks fall differently on every bowl, so yours will not match the photographs spot for spot. Choose the one you like looking at, because a set like this lives out on the counter.
