Sheets of slim vertical strips with a pale wood grain running through them, made to stick straight onto the wall behind a kitchen sink or a bathroom basin. Each sheet measures 9 by 11.8 inches, and it goes up with your hands rather than a bucket of adhesive.

No grout. No glue. No tools. Peel off the backing, press the sheet onto the wall, and line the next one up beside it.

The wall behind the sink is always the first to look tired

Every kitchen has one stretch of wall that takes the splashes, and it is almost always a painted one. Water flicks off the faucet, oil spits out of the pan, and over a year or two the paint behind the sink turns a shade darker than the rest of the room. You notice it every time you do the dishes.

Real tile fixes that, but real tile means a contractor, a mess of grout and a finish you live with for the next fifteen years. If you rent, it means asking permission, and the answer is usually no. These sheets give that wall a tiled face without any of it. They are also made to be removable, with no residue left behind, which matters on a wall that belongs to a landlord.

Raised strips, so it reads as tile and not a sticker

The cheap version of this idea is a flat printed vinyl, and it gives itself away the moment light falls across it, because a picture of tile has no edges. Every sheet here carries thirteen separate strips, each one raised and rounded at its sides, with a narrow channel between it and the next. Light catches those edges the way it catches real tile. From a step back, the wall reads as a run of slim tiles rather than a photograph of them.

The strips are PET plastic with a wood grain pattern running down the length of each one. The tone is pale and quiet, somewhere between whitewashed oak and warm sand, and it sits easily beside white stone, light wood shelving and a brass or black faucet.

Where it goes, and how many sheets you need

A kitchen backsplash is the obvious job, but the same sheets suit the wall behind a bathroom basin, or a feature wall that could use a little texture. They resist water, oil and dirt, which is exactly what that stretch of wall has thrown at it all day.

Each sheet is a little under three quarters of a square foot. The 10 Sheets pack adds up to a little over seven square feet, enough for a short run behind a basin, while the 30 Sheets pack gives about twenty-two for a longer kitchen wall. Measure the space first and allow a little extra for the edges. The exact figures are in the specifications. Then the wall you look at every time you do the dishes finally looks finished.
