Blending is the easy part. The washing up is not

You already know how a blender works. The trouble with a smoothie before work is everything around it: a heavy jug off the base, a lid, a spatula to scrape the last of it out, and then a travel bottle to pour it into because nobody walks to the car with a blender jug. By the time it is ready you have four things in the sink and five minutes less than you had.

This one does the whole job in a single piece. The cup you fill is the cup you blend in, and it is the cup you drink from. When you are done, the cap unscrews and there is one cup and one cap to rinse.

Fill it, screw the cap on, press twice

Drop in the fruit, a handful of grapes or a few chunks of orange, and screw the cap down onto the cup. The blade sits in a short chamber on the underside of the cap and reaches down into the top of the cup. It has six stainless steel points.

The button on the side of the cap needs two presses to start, not one. That is the detail that matters once it lives in a bag, because one accidental press is not enough to start the blade.

Then flip the tab on the top of the cap, push a straw through the opening underneath it, and drink straight from the cup. Close the tab and the small plug on its underside drops back into the opening. A tall window in the white sleeve shows how much is left, and the colored trim around the cap tells your cup apart from the one on the next desk.

A battery instead of a cable, charged from any USB port

Inside the cap is a 1200 mAh rechargeable battery. Under a small flap beside the button is the charging port, so it charges from a laptop or a USB wall plug, and while it is blending nothing is plugged into it at all.

That is what makes it genuinely portable rather than just small. It blends on a desk at work, in a hotel room, or on the tailgate after a run, and it stands about eight and a half inches tall, roughly the height of a tall travel coffee mug.

Make it in the kitchen at seven and drink it at your desk at half past eight, from the cup you made it in.
