The best part of the yard stops going dark at sunset

A pool is the thing everyone looks at during the day, and after sunset it turns into a black rectangle that you walk around carefully on the way back inside. Wiring a light into a finished pool is a job for an electrician, which is why so many evenings end with the water simply out of sight.

These lights skip the wiring entirely. Each one is a sealed disc about the size of a hockey puck, rated IP68 for continuous submersion, and it sits on a small mounting rack that you glue to the pool wall. Press the rack in place for a minute, let it set, then push the light down onto it. Put two along one side or four around the deep end, and the water glows from the inside instead of only reflecting the patio lights.

One remote runs every light in the water

The remote works by radio rather than infrared, so you do not have to aim it at each light, and one press changes every light in range at once. Pick any of sixteen solid colors, or let them run through the Flash, Fade or Smooth modes when the evening calls for something livelier. There are three brightness levels, from a low glow for a quiet swim to full brightness when friends are over.

A two, four or six hour timer lets you set the lights and forget them, and each light remembers its last setting the next time you switch it on. Range is up to 66 feet through open air but much shorter through water, so the edge of the pool is the best place to stand when you press.

Four hours on the charger, a full night in the water

There are no batteries to buy and nothing to plug in by the pool. A charge of about four hours by USB gives up to 24 hours on the brightest setting and up to 100 hours on the dimmest, which covers a long weekend of evenings outside before anything needs to come out of the water.

When it does, the light lifts off its rack and goes back on the cable, which splits at the end to charge two lights at the same time. Any USB wall adapter or computer port will run it, though the adapter itself is not included.

Not only for the pool

Because it is sealed and runs without a cord, it works anywhere water does. Set one in the bottom of a hot tub, at the edge of a garden pond or fountain, or in a fish tank, or drop one into a tall glass vase of water on the dinner table and the flowers glow from underneath. Sets of one, two or four all come with a single remote that runs every light in the set.

Care

Charge each light fully before its first use. After time in a chlorinated or saltwater pool, rinse it in fresh water and let it dry completely before you put it away somewhere cool and dry.

Clean the wall and the back of the rack before fitting it in a new spot. If the remote stops responding, charge the light.
