A round bamboo tray with a raised edge all the way around and two handles cut straight through the wall. Handles you hold, not handles that stick out

The two handles are long slots cut through the wall on opposite sides of the tray, each one long enough to take your fingers. Because they sit inside the wall rather than bolted onto it, there is nothing to catch on a cupboard shelf, nothing to snag a sleeve, and no screws to work loose. You lift from both sides at once, so the weight stays level in front of you instead of tipping toward the hand that is doing the work.

Set down, the handles disappear into the outline. On a table it reads as a clean circle of wood.

A raised edge, so nothing walks off it

A flat board is fine until somebody nudges it. Here a low bamboo wall stands up around the whole floor, 1.6 inches high on the two smaller sizes and 2 inches on the two larger ones, which is enough to stop a rolling lemon, a spoon or a tipped cup of sugar long before it reaches the table. The floor inside is flat and plain, so mugs, glasses and bottles stand level on it and stay upright on the way across the room.

The edge earns its keep between meals too. Keys, a watch and a pair of glasses stay together in it on a dresser, and remotes and coasters stop drifting across the coffee table.

Where each size earns its place

The Small works nicely on a nightstand, a dresser or a bathroom counter, as a place for the things you put down every evening. The Medium holds a teapot and a couple of cups, or a breakfast for one. The Large takes a French press and two mugs with room to spare, and the Extra Large is the one for an ottoman or the center of a coffee table, where it can hold books, a candle and a small vase as easily as it carries a tray of drinks out to the patio.
