A plain white wall clock with two slim hands cut from brown wood, twelve clean black numbers and nothing else on the face. The quartz movement sweeps the hands round without a sound, so it can hang above a bed or a desk and you will only notice it when you want the time.
No ticking. No second hand chasing itself round the dial. No glass throwing back the light from the window.
The problem with most clocks is the noise, not the time
You already know a wall clock tells the time, and nearly any of them gets that part right. What wears on you is everything else: the tick that turns loud the moment a room goes quiet, and the thin red second hand that keeps catching your eye while you are trying to read or work.
This one leaves both of them out. The movement is a silent sweep rather than a stepping tick, and there are only two hands, one for the hours and one for the minutes. Glance up and you get the time. Look away and the wall is still.
Wooden hands on a white face, and no frame around it
The face is a flat disc of white MDF with a matte finish, cut clean at the edge with no rim, no bezel and no glass in front. That keeps it light on the wall, closer to a print than to the kind of clock you remember from a school corridor.
The numbers are thin black Arabic numerals in a simple modern typeface, set upright and spaced evenly round the edge. The hands are the warm part. Each is a slender blade of brown wood with the grain running along it, tapering to a fine point, and the two meet at the center on a small round cap with a brass collar.
On the wall, or standing on a shelf
The white face and brown hands sit easily with oak, walnut, linen and pale painted walls, which is most of the house. It works nicely above a headboard, where silence matters most, and over a desk or a kitchen counter where you check the time between other things.
It does not have to go on the wall, either. With no frame and no glass, it can simply stand on a shelf, a mantel or the back of a kitchen counter, propped against the wall behind it, and move to another room whenever you like.
The Small is 9.8 inches across and suits a narrow stretch of wall or a busy kitchen, while the Large, at 11.8 inches, holds its own above a sideboard or a bed. To hang it, the slot behind the 12 goes over the hook that comes with it. It runs on one AA battery.
Hang it or stand it, and the room gets the time without the tick.
