Stainless Steel Moka Pot, Stovetop Espresso Maker for 2, 4, 6 or 9 Cups

Stainless steel from the base to the rim

It works the way a moka pot always has, and all three of its working parts are stainless steel: the base that holds the water, the funnel that holds the coffee and the top chamber the coffee rises into. It is polished to a bright silver finish that reflects the kitchen around it, so it looks as at home on an open shelf as it does on the burner.

The handle is a heat-resistant plastic in matte black, fixed high on the top chamber and curving down clear of the body, so your fingers stay well away from the hot steel when you pour. A black tab on the hinged lid lifts it with your thumb. It works on gas, electric and ceramic stovetops.

How to get a good pot every time

Fill the base with fresh water up to the safety valve on its side, and no higher. Drop in the funnel, fill it with ground coffee and level the top with a finger, without pressing it down. Screw the top chamber on firmly and set the pot over a low to medium heat.

When the coffee has risen through the center column and filled the top chamber, take it off the heat and pour. On gas, keep the flame small enough to stay under the base, so it never reaches up to the handle. Pour it fresh rather than keeping it to reheat later, because a second heating is what turns moka coffee bitter.

The valve on the side of the base is the safety part of the design. If the coffee is packed too tight or the flow is blocked, it lets the pressure out instead of letting it build inside the pot. Before the very first pot, run three or four pots of plain water through it and pour them away.

Which of the four sizes to pick

The cup count means small espresso cups, not mugs, and that is where most people get caught out. The 2 Cups makes one strong coffee for one person, or the base for a single latte. The 4 Cups suits two people over breakfast.

The 6 Cups and the 9 Cups are for a table of guests, or for a household where everyone tops their coffee up with hot milk in the morning. Whichever you choose, it unscrews into three parts, rinses out under the tap and goes back on the stove for the next good cup.

Care

Hand wash only. Unscrew the pot into its three parts, the base, the filter funnel and the top chamber, and rinse each one under the tap. Never put it in the dishwasher.
