The bars step out, so the towels never sit on each other

You already know what a towel rail is for. The trouble starts when three towels need a home on a wall with room for one rail, and the usual answer is a flat ladder of bars screwed straight to the wall. On that kind of rack the top towel drapes over the middle one, the middle one drapes over the bottom one, and by the evening all three are still damp where they touch.

This rack moves each bar out from the wall as it goes down. On the three-bar version the top bar sits 2.8 inches out, the middle bar 4.1 inches and the bottom bar 5.7 inches, so a towel on a higher bar falls behind the one below it rather than onto it. Seen from the side, the bars make a small staircase. Air gets down between the towels, and you can take any one of them without disturbing the others.

Held at both ends, and the same on either side

A narrow plate is screwed to the wall at each end of the rack, and every bar is a single bent piece that runs between them. It comes out of one plate, turns through a wide rounded bend, runs along the wall and turns back into the other plate the same way. The two ends mirror each other, and there is no bare bar end for a hip or a sleeve to catch on.

The bars are solid and generously rounded rather than thin wire, and the bends are smooth all the way round, so a towel goes on and comes off without snagging. The finish is an even matte black that suits dark tiles, pale marble and plain painted walls alike. Aluminum does not rust, which is the reason to choose it for a room that steams up every morning.

Small hooks at the bottom for everything else

Below the lowest bar, a pair of small hooks sits side by side at the foot of an end plate, and the three-bar rack has a pair under each of its two plates. They take the things that never have anywhere to go in a bathroom: a loofah on its cord, a wash mitt, a robe by its loop. It keeps them off the edge of the bath and off the floor.

Two bars or three, narrow or wide

The three-bar rack is the one for a household, with a bath towel, a hand towel and a face cloth each on its own bar. Two bars suit a guest bathroom or a single person, and they work well over a bath where a shorter rack keeps the wall above the tub clear. The 40 cm width fits the short stretch of wall beside a basin or a door frame, while the 60 cm width gives full size bath towels more room to spread out along each bar.
