The hour it is actually for

Nobody buys a hammock for noon. You buy it for the ninety minutes after the sun drops behind the trees, when the heat finally goes out of the air and the whole wood turns pleasant, which happens to be the same ninety minutes the mosquitoes have been waiting for all day. So you lie there swatting your own forearms for a while, and then you give up and go and sit in the car.

The mesh here is a full canopy rather than a sheet thrown over you. It stands up over the hammock's whole length on a ridgeline, held clear of your face by six short tapes, and its lower edge comes all the way down onto the fabric instead of stopping somewhere above it. A zip runs along that join with two pulls on it. You climb in, run them shut behind you, and the evening carries on without you. The mesh is polyester, so the air still moves through it, and on a night with nothing biting the whole canopy comes off.

Two people, and the number underneath them

102 by 55 inches, which is a real double rather than a single with an optimistic label. Two adults fit, and one adult lying diagonally has room to roll over without touching a side. It is rated to 441 lb in total, which is 200 kg: two grown adults in it at the same time, at around 220 lb a person, boots and packs included.

The body is 210T nylon, the thin crinkled cloth that stuffs down to almost nothing and still carries a grown adult. It is one continuous sheet with a seam running the length of it and reinforced stitching where the fabric gathers at each end. There is no rope, no netting and no spreader bar anywhere in it. Nothing to snap, and nothing to press a line across your back at two in the morning.

Everything that hangs it is already in the bag

This is where a cheap hammock costs you a second time. It arrives, and the straps that would actually get it onto a tree turn out to be a separate purchase you make a week later.

Two flat webbing straps come in the pack, and they go round the trunk rather than into it, so there is no screw, no hook and no mark left on the bark. Two metal carabiners with sprung gates clip the hammock to them. A hank of cord comes with it for the ridgeline. It hangs the day it arrives, with no knot you have to look up.

Then it packs into itself. The pouch hanging off the side is sewn on rather than loose, so it cannot be left in the last campsite, and the hammock and the net stuff back into it together.

Six colors, and every one of them is really two: pink over turquoise, dark teal over lime, grey over royal blue, with Army Green and Camouflage the quiet ones. The mesh above is dyed to match whichever you pick, though you will have stopped looking at it a minute after you lie down.
