A real flame you can watch from every seat

Candles give a table light, and an electric fireplace gives it a picture of a fire. This gives it the real thing: soft yellow tongues of flame rising from a burner at the center of the base, moving with the air in the room the way a fire does.

The clear cylinder stands all the way around the burner, so the flame is on show from wherever you are sitting, with no front and no back. The top is open, so nothing sits between you and the flame but a thin wall of glass. At 11 inches tall it stands about the height of a tall vase, which is enough to anchor a coffee table without blocking anyone's view across it.

Three fuels, one wick, and a snuffer to finish

It burns ethanol gel, bio-ethanol or isopropyl alcohol at 70% or stronger, so you are not tied to one brand of cartridge. The fuel is sold separately. Lighting it is manual: add the fuel, light the wick, and that is the whole setup.

When the evening ends, the flame snuffer puts it out. You never blow it out or pour water on it. Used in a well-ventilated room it gives off very little smoke or smell, but it is a real flame, so it is not completely smoke-free, and indoors it still needs fresh air moving through the room.

A marble base made to sit on the table you already have

The base is marble, designed to spread the heat and help protect the surface underneath it. On a delicate finish, stand it on a heat-resistant mat as well. The Black has a fine textured matte finish that sits well with dark wood, slate and stone, while the White is smooth and matte and looks right on pale oak, marble and linen.

At just over two pounds, it moves easily from the dining table to the patio and back once it has cooled. Use it indoors or out, on a stable surface away from curtains, fabric, smoke detectors and anything else that could catch, keep pets well clear, and never leave it burning on its own. Then pour a drink and sit with it, because that is what it is for.

Let it cool completely before you refuel, clean or move it. Use only bio-ethanol, ethanol gel or isopropyl alcohol at 70% or stronger, never any other fuel or accelerant.

Once it is cold, wipe the glass cylinder with a soft, dry cloth. Keep abrasive cleaners off the marble base.
