You have almost certainly owned a clock that ticked. It seemed fine in the shop and fine in the daytime. Then the house went quiet at half past eleven and it turned into a metronome you could not stop hearing.

That noise is a stepping movement — one mechanical jolt per second, sixty a minute, all night. This one sweeps instead. The second hand glides continuously rather than jumping, so there is no step to make a sound. Put your ear against the glass and you get nothing.

It wakes you, technically. It also puts a screen in your hand before your feet touch the floor, and there is always something on it — a message from last night, a work email that landed at 6am, a feed you did not mean to open. Twenty minutes gone and you have not stood up yet.

A clock cannot do any of that. It tells you it is 7:04 and that is the whole conversation. The limitation is the point.

It also means the phone can charge somewhere else. The hall, the kitchen, anywhere that is not eighteen inches from your head.

Press the button and the whole face lights up

There is a button on the back, top left, where your thumb lands when you pick the clock up. Press it and a ring of warm amber light comes on inside the rim and washes across the dial.

Amber rather than white or blue, and it lights the face rather than shining out at you — so you can check the time at 3am without a bright screen going off in a dark room.

Metal, and four controls you can feel

The body is a single drum of metal, matte finished, two inches deep, with real weight to it. The dial sits behind flat glass rather than plastic, so it stays clear instead of scuffing and clouding. Two solid pegs lift the face and tilt it back a few degrees toward you, which is the angle you want when you are lying down and the table is lower than the bed.

Round the back there are four things and no menu: two knurled wheels for the time and the alarm, a slider that turns the alarm on and off, and a hatch for a single AA battery. You can see from across the room which way that slider is set, which no phone alarm has ever let you do.

Nothing to pair, nothing to update, nothing that resets itself when the power goes out. Six colors, all with the same white face, gold hands and feet: deep navy, matte black, off-white, sage green, butter yellow and a dusty pink.
