One jack-o'-lantern is a decoration. A row of them grinning the same way along a shelf says the whole room has decided it is October. The 3 m string puts twenty across a mantel or along the top of a window. The 6 m puts forty down a banister or around a doorway, spaced evenly so the row stays a row.

The wire is clear and fine, so once the lights are on it drops out of the picture and what you see is the lanterns. Drape it along the mantel, loop it down a banister rail or lay it flat along a bookshelf, and each lantern hangs upright from its own stem.

The shell glows and the face stays dark

Each lantern is a squared-off shell of molded orange plastic, ribbed and wrinkled like the real thing, with green leaves painted across its shoulders where the stem meets the wire. The face is molded into the surface and picked out in black: two round eyes glancing sideways, a small round nose, and a wide grin with a single tooth hanging from the top lip.

With the light on, the whole shell glows amber from inside while the black features stay solid. That contrast is what lets every face read from across the room, even at the far end of a 6 m run.

Eight modes, a timer and a dimmer, all from the sofa

The string comes with a small remote that has on and off along the top with a timer button between them, eight light modes underneath, and two buttons at the bottom that turn the brightness up or down. Still on gives a steady warm glow through every face, and the dimmer takes it down low for a film night.

The other modes fade the lanterns in and out, send the light along the string in waves and pairs, or flash them like stars, and the first mode cycles through the lot by itself. That is the one to put on when the doorbell starts going.

Which one to pick

Pick the length by the run you want to fill. The 3 m suits one mantel, a bookshelf or a single window, and the 6 m covers a whole banister or a long porch rail. The figures are in the specifications.

USB runs from a USB socket or a plug adapter, which keeps things simple anywhere near an outlet. USB + Battery adds a battery option, so the string can go where no cable reaches, like the middle of a party table. The string is rated IP42, so outside, keep it under a porch roof and keep the USB end dry.

Set the mode once, leave the remote on the arm of the sofa, and the row takes care of itself until November.
