Plain fall leaves stop working at five o'clock

The leaves go up in the last week of September and they look right for about eight hours of the day. By the time anybody is actually in the room to see them, which is after work with the lamps on and the curtains shut, the mantel is a dark shape and the season is over until morning.

Autumn is the season that happens in the evening. It is dark by five and it stays that way until bed, and those are exactly the hours when an unlit row of leaves has nothing left to give. Here the light is already inside the leaf, so it is doing its job through the stretch you are actually home for.

The light sits at the leaf, not behind it

The usual fix is to buy the leaves, buy a set of fairy lights, and thread one through the other. It half works. You hang two things instead of one, you untangle two things next October, and because the bulbs end up behind the leaves what you see is a row of bright points with some dark red shapes in front of them.

On the Leaves and Pumpkins strand there is a single small warm LED at the middle of every blade. The leaf is the thing that glows. It goes hot amber through the center, holds its red at the lobes and the tips, and the veins come up dark against it. Between the leaves hang ribbed translucent pumpkins, each with its own light inside, so the whole shell lights rather than a bulb sitting behind it.

Outside is fine. The battery box is the part to think about

The lights themselves carry an IP44 rating, which covers a night of drizzle on a porch rail or along a fence. The box that holds the batteries is not sealed, and that is the one thing worth planning before you hang it.

Put it somewhere the rain cannot land on it. Inside the porch, behind a post, or tucked down into a basket or a lantern. Indoors none of that matters.

Which one to pick

Leaves and Pumpkins is the louder of the two. It reads as a holiday from the other side of the street, so that is the one for a porch rail, a front window, or the table the party is on. Leaves Only is quieter, with the same leaves on a clear wire and nothing else along it. Pick that one if it has to stay up through November without looking like a party you have already had.

Small suits a mantel, a single window or the middle of a table. Medium takes a doorway or a run of banister nicely, and Large is the one for a porch rail, a fence, or a whole room in one go. The figures are in the specifications.

The season is short and most of it happens after dark, which is the half that plain leaves were never going to cover.
