A clock that looks as if it softened in the heat and slid over the edge of the shelf. Its top end lies flat on the shelf and the face folds down over the front. The black Roman numerals stretch and sag along with it, so you can still read the time while the whole thing appears to be quietly melting.
No nail. No hook. No drilling. Set it on the edge and let it hang.
It hangs from the edge of a shelf, not from the wall
Most clocks need a nail in the wall or a clear spot in the middle of a shelf. This one is made for the edge. The case is bent through a soft right angle. Its top end rests flat on the shelf with a small knurled crown at the back, like the one on a pocket watch, while the rest of the face curls over the front and hangs straight down. Nothing screws in, and nothing comes in the box to fix it in place.
That puts a clock in places a clock rarely goes: the end of a bookshelf beside the paperbacks, the edge of a mantel, the top of a cabinet or the corner of a desk. It also stands upright on a flat surface, so it can move from the bookshelf to a bedside table whenever you feel like a change.
Four finishes, and the shelf each one suits
Black is glossy and sharp. It stands out best against a white bookcase or pale oak, where the melted outline reads from across the room. Silver is a mirror finish that catches the window light and picks up the colors around it, so it looks a little different from every angle.
Gold is a mirror finish too, warmer and softer, and it looks right beside walnut, brass and a row of old hardbacks. White is glossy and quiet. On a white shelf the case almost disappears, and what you notice is a set of stretched black numerals hanging off the edge.
Melted on the outside, still a working clock
Under a clear domed cover sits a white dial with black Roman numerals, each one drawn out long as if it has started to run. They bend with the face but stay where you expect them, and two plain black hands, one for the hours and one for the minutes, turn over them from a small metal center. There is no second hand.
A quartz movement keeps the time without a tick, on one AA battery that you add yourself. At about 7 inches tall it is roughly the height of a paperback, small enough to sit among the books without crowding them. Set it on the edge once, and it becomes the first thing anyone notices on the shelf.
