A soft white skull that lights up through its own surface, so the brow, the eye sockets and every tooth stand out in whichever of nine colors you choose. It charges over USB and runs without a cord, which means it can sit on a bookshelf, a nightstand or the middle of the party table with nothing trailing back to the wall.
No cord. No bulb to change. No candle to keep an eye on.
Most light-up skulls are a bulb behind two holes
The usual Halloween version is a hollow plastic shell with a light inside and the eyes cut straight through, so what you actually see is two bright spots with a dark shape around them. From across the room it could be almost anything, and up close the bulb is the first thing you notice.
Here the whole head is the lampshade. The light comes through the silicone itself, and because the eye sockets and the nose are molded hollows rather than holes, they glow a little brighter than the forehead instead of glaring at you. The cheekbones, the brow ridge and the line of clenched teeth catch the light like carved relief. It reads as a skull first and a lamp second, which is the whole reason to put one on the shelf.
Nine colors, and a remote that holds the one you picked
Warm white is the everyday setting, soft enough for a bedside table and close to candlelight in color. For the party there are eight more: red, amber, green, cyan, blue, sky blue, magenta and pink. Pick one on the remote and it stays put, or set it cycling through them on its own.
The same remote dims or brightens the glow and carries a timer that switches it off after 15, 30 or 60 minutes. Set it on your way to bed and there is nothing to get up for later. A tap on the lamp itself changes the mode too, which helps on the night the remote has vanished under a cushion.
No cord, so it goes wherever the room needs it
The built-in battery takes about two hours to charge from the included Micro USB cable, then gives you more than six hours of light. That is a whole evening of trick-or-treaters at the front window, or a night on the nightstand, with no outlet anywhere near it.
The shell is soft silicone that gives a little when you press it. At just under five inches tall, it is easy to carry from the hallway to the desk to the dinner table. Bring it out for October, then leave it on warm white by the bed for the rest of the year.
