Five white fabric ghosts in black witch hats hang from one thin wire by the tips of their hats, and each one is lit from inside the hat by a few small colored LEDs. Run the string along a porch, wind it through a low branch or hang it across a doorway, and one strip of wire dresses the whole space.

Real cloth that moves. A glow that starts in the hat. A figure big enough to read from the sidewalk.

Loose cloth hangs and sways, which is what makes a ghost look like one

Each one is a light cloak of thin, smooth polyester, gathered under the brim and left to fall free, so it hangs in soft folds and finishes in a ragged hem of pointed tips. When a door opens or an evening breeze comes across the porch, the cloth drifts on the wire the way a sheet on a line does.

They are a good size, too. From the point of the hat to the bottom of the hem each one measures about 17.7 inches, roughly a quarter of the height of a front door. A row of them along the porch eaves reads clearly from the end of the driveway. Every hat has a wide floppy brim and a glittery gold band with a small orange buckle. Under it sits a pair of narrowed eyes over a wide grin with two little fangs.

The LEDs are tucked up inside each black cone, so after dark the hat shows points of red, green, blue and warm white through its cloth. Beneath the brim, the white body lights up from the top down, almost white around the face and a soft lavender toward the hem.

The face stays crisp and black against that glow. From across the yard you still see the narrowed eyes and the grin rather than a pale blur, and in daylight, with the lights off, the white cloth and black hats still say Halloween.

One string of five, or one on its own

The string of five is the one for a long run. The first hat and the last sit about 59 inches apart, with roughly 15 inches between neighbors, which fills a porch rail, the top of a wide doorway or the lower limbs of a tree. Pick the battery box when the string is going somewhere without an outlet, or USB when it will stay near a port or a plug adapter all month.

A single one suits a hook by the front door, a lamp post or the end of a stair rail. It runs on three LR44 button cells and can hold a steady glow, flash or flash quickly. Hang two or three at different heights in a tree, and the yard looks like somebody planned it before the first trick-or-treater knocks.
