A glazed ceramic tray, just over nine inches across, painted in a bold check and finished with a soft wavy edge. It gives the rings, keys and loose bits on a dresser one obvious place to land, and it looks good doing it.

No saucer borrowed from the kitchen. No loose pile on the dresser. Empty your pockets into it at night, and everything is where you left it in the morning.

Every surface grows a small pile, so give it a better one

Rings, a watch, the car keys, a hair clip, the earrings that came off before bed. None of it has a proper home, so it ends up scattered across the top of the dresser or dropped into whatever dish happened to be nearest. A tray does not stop the pile from forming. It draws a line around it, and that is the difference between clutter and something that looks as if it was put there on purpose.

Which is why the tray itself matters. A plain white dish disappears, and a cheap plastic one looks exactly like what it is. This one has enough pattern and enough shape to sit out on a dresser, a bathroom counter or a coffee table as a piece in its own right, whether there is anything in it or not.

A check that wanders, and an edge that waves

The pattern is a classic checkerboard, but the grid is not ruled straight. The lines bow and lean as they cross the tray, and the squares grow and shrink a little from one side to the other, so the whole face reads as a loose, hand-drawn check rather than a printed one.

The outline follows the same idea. Instead of a circle, the rim runs in a ring of soft, uneven scallops, so the tray looks closer to a flower or a cloud. A shallow raised lip goes all the way around, so a ring or an earring stays in the tray instead of skating off the edge. The outside of that lip is plain white, and the whole tray sits under a glossy glaze that picks up the light from a window.

Black is the sharper of the two, and green is the softer

The Black tray is black squares on white, and it has the most contrast of the pair. It looks at home against dark wood, stone or a black and white bathroom, and it holds its own on a busy dresser. The Green is a deep, muted green on white with a warmer feel, and it suits pale wood, cream walls and a room with a few plants in it.

Both are the same size and the same shape, with the same glaze and the same wavy edge. Set either one down by the door or beside the bed, and the small stuff finally has somewhere to go.
