The ends of the branches are sprayed white, and round bursts of long, fine white-tipped needles sit among them, while the needles nearer the trunk stay a deep pine green. From across the room, that contrast is what makes it look cold and fresh. It never looks like a tree that has been dipped in white or dusted with glitter.

The shape is a classic tapered tree, with five or six tiers of branches that widen toward the bottom and rise to a single upright tip. It is lighter and more open than a big floor tree. A little of the dark trunk shows between the tiers, and the pine cones and berries sit in those gaps, where you can actually see them.

With lights or without, and where each one suits

With Lights comes with a string of small warm white LEDs wound through the branches, from the top down to the lowest tier. The thin wire is dark green, so it disappears into the needles. It runs down to a small battery box that sits on the table beside the stand, so there is no socket to find and it can go on a windowsill, a hall table or a dining table. The batteries are not included.

Without Lights is the same tree with nothing to switch on. It suits a shelf or a sideboard already lit by lamps and candles, or anyone who would rather add a few small ornaments and a ribbon of their own. With no box and no wire, it is also the easy one to leave on a desk all season.
