An evaporative cooler is not an air conditioner, and the difference matters

An air conditioner has a compressor and a sealed refrigerant circuit, and it carries heat out of the room through a hose. This has neither, which is why there is no hose and nothing to fit to a window. Instead there is a fan, a cooling pad and a tank, and the air gives up heat to the water it passes through.

What comes out is cooler than the room and damper than the room. Sit in the stream and the difference is obvious. Stand across the room and it is not, because nothing has left the building. It also works better in dry air than in muggy air, since air already carrying water has less room to take up more.

It goes where you are, which is the whole argument for it

Four swivelling castors and a handle on each side, so it moves from the office to the front room to the workshop without unplugging anything but itself. A fixed air conditioner cools a room whether or not anyone is in it. This one gets pointed at a person.

At 22.1 inches tall and 10.2 inches across it sits beside a desk or a sofa rather than under a window, and the controls are on the top panel with a remote for when it is across the room.

Water, or water and ice

The tank lives in the base and the pad sits above it. Plain water is enough. Adding ice makes the air leaving the pad colder for as long as the ice lasts, which is a real effect and a temporary one.

The same pad that wets the air catches the larger dust that passes through it, so it wants rinsing occasionally. Empty the tank before the unit goes away for the winter.
