An octopus in antique gold look, sitting low on eight curling arms whose tips each take a mug by its handle. It holds up to eight cups on the counter. Full or empty, it looks like a piece of sculpture.
Your everyday mugs move off the shelf and onto the tips, where you can see them and reach them. The cupboard gets a shelf back. When every cup is in the dishwasher, the octopus is still worth looking at.
A mug tree you would leave out with no mugs on it
You already know what a mug tree does. Most are a pole with a few pegs. They look like kitchen hardware, so they get pushed to the back of the counter. This one is cast as an octopus, with a domed head and two round eyes sitting low in the middle and eight flat arms that sweep down to the table, bend, and rise again in curls at different heights.
The two big front arms carry double rows of raised ring suckers on their inner faces, largest near the table and smaller towards the tips. The finish is bright gold on every raised edge and near-black in the hollows, worn in dark streaks along the arms like an old ship's fitting. Light catches the detail from whichever side you look.
The curled tips are the hooks
Each arm finishes in a curl or an upturned flick. Hook a handle over a tip and the mug hangs on the outside of the octopus, clear of its neighbors. You can lift one off without knocking the rest. It takes up to eight cups at once, and every handle stays in view, which makes your favorite easy to find first thing in the morning.
It stands on the bends of its own arms, with no base plate, and measures 10.6 inches across and 7.5 inches tall. That leaves room for it beside the kettle or the coffee machine, under the wall cabinets, without taking over the counter.
The same arms hold a watch and bracelets
Move it to the dresser and the tips take a watch, a few bracelets and a necklace or two. The chains stay off the surface instead of knotting together in a dish. At the end of the day there is one place for the watch to go.
It suits a coastal or nautical room best, and it reads as a talking piece on an open shelf anywhere else. The mugs you use every day end up where you can see them, on something far better looking than a pole and pegs.
