A lid with nothing on it to break

Most plastic tubs give out at the lid first. A clip cracks, a corner warps after a few hot washes, and the lid that survives no longer matches anything else in the drawer. This lid is a single piece of soft silicone. You press it down over the rim, a ridge on its underside settles inside the mouth of the box, and the food stays sealed in on the fridge shelf or in a work bag.

To open it, you lift one corner and peel the lid back. There is no tab to find, no hinge to wear out and no latch to line up, and because the box is a plain rounded rectangle, the lid goes back on either way round.

Freezer, microwave and dishwasher, in the same box

Silicone takes cold and heat that would leave a thin plastic tub brittle or bent. Freeze a portion of chili on Sunday, take the lid off and warm it through in the microwave midweek, then put the whole container in the dishwasher afterwards. The containers also go in the oven up to 446°F with the lid removed, so leftovers can reheat in the box they were stored in.

Inside, a column of measuring marks is molded into the wall, so you can portion rice, oats or soup for the week without reaching for a jug. The outside is matte and soft to hold. The inside is smoother, which makes it easy to scrape clean.

The Small suits a side of berries, a dip or a handful of nuts for the afternoon. Full, they stack lid on lid in the fridge, smallest on top, so three meals take the shelf space of one.
