A table lamp in the shape of a jack-o'-lantern, with a shade laid out in a mosaic of orange, amber and yellow. Every section is outlined in a dark raised line, like an old leaded window. Put it on a sideboard or a bookshelf in October and it earns its place there whether it is lit or not.
No battery box. No wiring. Plug it in, fit a small bulb, and the whole shade lights.
A lamp first, and a Halloween decoration second
Most Halloween lights are made to be seen from the sidewalk, strung along a porch rail or hung in a front window where the street can see them. This one belongs in a room you actually live in, at the height of a sideboard or a shelf, where you see it close up every evening.
With the bulb on, the light comes through the shade section by section. Each one glows its own orange or gold, and the dark lines between them stay dark. It gives the corner it sits in the low, warm kind of light you want in a hallway or a living room after dinner, rather than flooding the whole room.
Close up, every section has streaks and colors of its own
The mosaic is set in rows of small sections, most of them rectangles, that follow the lobes of a real pumpkin from the stem down to a pointed, uneven lower edge. Dark raised lines outline every one, the way the leading does in an old church window. The shade is glass and resin, no two sections are quite the same color, and some carry red or pale yellow streaks running right through them.
The face is picked out in darker sections. Two triangle eyes and a triangle nose sit above a wide grin, and the grin is set with milky white teeth that stand out against the dark band around them.
Switched on, the orange and gold come up and the teeth read cream against the dark. A pool of light spills onto the table from under the lower edge. Switched off in daylight it still looks like a pumpkin, with the streaks showing in every section and a sculpted stem in a bronze and gold-toned finish curling over the top.
The bulb is not included, and it takes an E12 or E14 base
Order a bulb with it. The lamp takes one small bulb with an E12 or E14 base, and it works with LED, incandescent or fluorescent bulbs. A warm white LED is the easy choice if it is going to be on for whole evenings.
Choose the 100-120V version for outlets in the US and Canada, or the 220-240V version for the UK, Europe and Australia. Keep it indoors, in a dry spot. That suits the places it looks best anyway: the hall sideboard, the end of a bookshelf, a mantel beside a few real gourds, or the middle of the table the candy is on.
Leave it lit through the season, and when the decorations come down, switch it off and put it away until next October.
