A field of carved pumpkins under a full moon with black cats picking their way across it, woven into the cloth rather than printed on top of it. It hangs over the back of a sofa and reads from the other side of the room, and just as well across your knees.
No print. No fleece. Nothing to hang, pin or plug in. Shake it out, drop it over the sofa, and that is the job done.
The only thing you put up in October that you can also sit under
Everything else the season asks for wants a nail, a ladder or a free socket, and then it wants an evening of your time as well. This wants an arm. You shake it out, throw it over the back of the sofa, and the room has turned festive in about four seconds.
Then the evening comes and it stops being a decoration. Cotton and polyester, with real weight in your hands, so it settles over your knees instead of sliding off them, and it gets softer every time you wash it. A paper bat taped to the window cannot do any of that.
Woven, which is exactly why it does not look printed
Get close and you can see the ribs. Every color is a thread running through the cloth instead of ink sitting on the surface, which is why the orange has depth and the black cats have blue in their fur. The craft has a name, tatting, and it is the thing that separates this from the printed throws that fill the same shelf every autumn.
Nothing sits on top of the cloth, so there is nothing on it to crack along the line you fold it on. The illustration is properly drawn, too. Lanterns with their faces cut out, a cat up on its toes with its back arched against the moon, another lying along a pumpkin with its yellow eyes on you, cream stars in a deep blue sky. Look at it in daylight and it is an autumn scene that happens to have cats in it.
Where it ends up
Over a sofa back, along the foot of a bed, over the arm of a reading chair, or flat on the floor as a mat, and it has enough weight in it to stay where you put it. The edges finish in a knotted fringe, in the same orange, black and cream yarns as the picture.
Small works nicely over a single chair or a two-seater. Medium suits a three-seat sofa or a double bed, with enough to hang down each side. Large covers a bed properly, or a sofa end to end, and the figures for all three are in the specifications below.
A festive thing that gives you something back on a cold evening, which is rarer in October than it ought to be.
