One string of 1,000 small LEDs on a dark green wire, 328 feet long, which is enough to light a tall tree from the top branch to the bottom and still have plenty left over for the garland on the mantel or the rail along the porch. It plugs into the wall, and the remote in the box turns it on, dims it, changes the mode and sets the timer from wherever you are sitting.

No second string joined onto the first. No crawling behind the tree to find a switch. No pale cable showing through the branches.

Enough light for the whole tree, in one run

If you have ever joined three or four short strings end to end to cover one tree, you know how it goes. The plugs bunch up behind the trunk, the colors never quite match from one box to the next, and the bottom third of the tree is always the dark part. This is one continuous string, so there is nothing to join and nothing to match.

With 1,000 LEDs spread along 328 feet, there is one about every four inches. That leaves enough length to wind deep into the tree, close to the trunk, as well as out along the tips, which is what makes a tree glow from the inside instead of looking outlined. There are 6.6 feet of lead wire between the plug and the first light, so the outlet can sit behind the tree or along the wall. It all comes wound on a reel, and you unwind as you go.

A green wire that disappears into the branches

The wire is thin and dark green, two strands twisted together, and the LEDs are small beads about the size of a grain of rice. Among pine needles the wire all but vanishes, so in the daytime the tree still looks like a tree rather than a tree wrapped in cable. In the evening, only the points of light show.

Everything from the remote, and one button on the plug

The remote switches the lights on and off, sets the brightness up or down, starts the timer and picks any of eight lighting modes, from steady on to flashing. The string remembers the last mode you chose, so it comes back the same way the next time you switch it on. If the remote has gone under a cushion, a button on the adapter also moves through the modes.

Warm White, White or Multicolor, with a US or EU plug

Warm White is the soft, golden glow most people picture on a Christmas tree, and it sits well with wood, brass and red. White is crisper and cooler, and it suits silver and frosted decorations or a house front at night. Multicolor mixes red, green, blue, yellow and pink along the string, which is the cheerful, old-fashioned family tree. Choose the US plug for standard 110 V outlets in North America, or the EU plug for 220 V outlets in Europe.

Indoors on the tree, or outside along the porch

The string is rated IP44, so it can go around the shrubs by the front door, along a porch railing or through the branches of an outdoor tree and stay out in the rain. The adapter and the plug connection are the exception, and they need to stay dry, under cover or indoors. Put it up once, choose the mode you like, and every time you switch it on it comes back exactly as you left it.
