You already know what a fan does, and that is the trouble with most of them. An open cage hangs a few flat blades in a wire guard, and what comes off them is a wide soft breeze that has spent itself before it crosses the room. Aim it at a room and the room does not notice. Aim it at yourself and you get a draft down one side of your face until you turn it away.

The blades here sit well back inside a barrel, behind a spiral of fine gray spokes across the mouth, and the barrel is the part doing the work. It stops the air spreading sideways as it leaves, so the column holds together long enough to reach the far wall and come back along the ceiling. You aim it at the room instead of at a person, and it suits spaces of roughly 160 to 270 square feet.

Nothing to plug in, and nowhere it cannot go

The battery is built in and gives three to six hours a charge, depending which of the three speeds you settle on. That is an evening on a balcony, or a working afternoon at a desk nowhere near an outlet, or a night beside a bed in a room where the only outlet is behind the dresser.

It charges over USB from a 5 volt source, so a laptop, a wall plug or a power bank will all fill it, and it runs while charging if you would rather leave it connected. A USB cable is not included.

Quiet enough that you forget it is running

Under 36 decibels, from a brushless motor with no brushes to buzz and nothing rubbing against anything else. On the low speed what you hear is air rather than machinery, and that is the whole difference between a fan you sleep beside and a fan you switch off at two in the morning and then lie awake being too warm.

Set it down, or hang it up

The head tilts on a pivot at each side, so the column can go up at the ceiling, out at the far wall, or flat along a countertop. A wall hook comes with it, which means the fan does not have to occupy a surface at all. In a dorm room, a workshop or a camper that matters, because every flat surface already has something on it.

It weighs under 20 ounces and travels in one hand, so in practice it follows you around the house: desk in the morning, kitchen at six, bedside at eleven. Most fans get bought for one room and stay in it. This one does not have to.
