A braided cable from the cuff to the toe

The front of each stocking carries one broad plait down the middle, three thick strands crossing over each other the whole length of the leg before they curve round with the foot toward the toe. A narrower rope cable runs beside it on each side, and thin columns of small raised knots sit between them. Even a plain color gets deep ridges and real shadow. You can read the texture from across the room.

The cuff is knit in a different stitch, a band of tight vertical ribs that folds down over the top of the leg and keeps the opening soft and rounded. You see it first on the mantel, and on the two-tone versions the cuff carries the second color.
