You carve it early so it is up in time, and it rarely makes it to the night that matters looking the way it did when you finished. The grin starts to sag, the edges of the eyes go soft, and a little mold creeps in around the cuts just when everyone is coming to see it. Clearing it away afterwards is its own job, and nobody volunteers for it.

This one is molded in PE plastic with the face already cut, so there is no pulp, no knife and no newspaper on the kitchen table. It lights on batteries. Set it on a bookshelf, a hall table or the bottom stair and leave it glowing all evening. Cleanup is the easy part: turn the light off, lift it off the shelf, and it is ready for next October exactly as it is.

The light comes out through the face, not through a painted window

Plenty of plastic pumpkins have a face printed on the front and a bulb glowing behind the whole shell. Here the eyes, the nose and the grin are open holes, so they are the brightest part of the lamp while the rest of the shell glows a softer, deeper orange around them. That contrast is what makes it read as carved from across a dark room.

Seven of the eight are orange, with ribbed sides and a molded stem on top, and a few carry a fine speckle or a rough, textured skin like the real thing. The White Scowl is the odd one out: a cream shell with every cut in the face outlined in dark paint, which gives it a sharper, more drawn look when it is lit.

Which face to pick

Goofy Eyes, Round Eyes and White Scowl are the small ones, and they work nicely on a mantel, a windowsill or the middle of a dinner table where something larger would get in the way. Wide Smile is low and broad, so it suits a sideboard or a hearth. Sly Grin is taller than it is wide and sits comfortably on a console or a shelf by the door.

Classic Face, Angry Fangs and Tall Classic are the big three. They are the ones to stand on the floor in a hallway, beside the fireplace or at the foot of the stairs, where a small lamp would simply disappear. It is meant for indoors. The shell is not waterproof, so keep it inside or somewhere fully dry, and let it glow through the evenings from the start of October until the last trick-or-treater has gone home.
