A wall clock with a compass rose at its center, black Roman numerals round the edge and a clear acrylic face that lets your wall show straight through it. Choose it plain, or with an LED backlight that turns the middle of the clock into a soft ring of color after dark, in any one of seven colors.
No bulky frame. No painted dial covering up the wall. Just a black compass that seems to sit on the paint, with gold hands telling the time over it.
A clear face that lets the wall do the work
Most wall clocks are a disc of white or wood that sits on the wall like a plate, and the bigger they get, the more of the wall they cover. This one is clear acrylic, so the only things you see are the parts that matter: a thin black outer ring, twelve Roman numerals, a second ring inside them, and the compass in the middle.
Everything in between is see-through, which means the color behind it becomes part of the clock. On a navy or green wall it reads as black lines on color, on pale plaster it looks almost drawn on, and on wood paneling the grain runs right through it. At 11.8 inches across, it holds a stretch of wall above a sideboard, a desk or a fireplace without crowding it.
A compass rose that reads like the real thing
The center is laid out the way an old ship's compass card is. There is an eight-point star with long points at north, east, south and west and shorter points between them, a ring of graduation ticks around it, and the lowercase nw, ne, se and sw set along the curve. A white disc sits behind that ring, so the compass stands out clearly while the rest of the face stays clear.
Three slim gold-tone hands turn over it: hour, minute and a thin second hand. The movement is quiet, so it suits a study or a bedroom as well as the living room, and it runs on a battery that you add yourself.
Standard or LED Backlight, and which one to pick
Both are the same clock, with the same face, numerals and gold hands. The Standard has no light and no cable, so it can go on any wall in the house and needs nothing but its battery.
The LED Backlight adds a light hidden behind the white center disc. Switched off, it looks like the Standard apart from its cable. Switched on, the glow spreads out from behind the compass, across the clear face and onto the wall around it, in white, two shades of blue, teal, green, purple or red, all changed from a remote control. A thin black cable runs down from the bottom of the clock. It works best where that cable can drop out of sight behind a sideboard, a console or a shelf, in a living room, a den or a hallway where a glow in the evening is the whole idea.
Either way, it reads as a compass from the doorway and as the time from the sofa.
