A cutting board with a different surface on each face: 304 stainless steel on one side and a matte fruit and veg surface on the other, so you flip it to suit whatever is on the counter. When the knife starts to drag, there is a sharpener built into the corner, right beside the handle.
No second board taking up the cupboard. No sharpener lost at the back of the drawer. Cut, flip, rinse and put it away.
Steel on one side for the messy jobs
You already know how a cutting board works, and you know the trouble with the ones you have: the wooden board darkens where the beetroot went, and the plastic one still smells of garlic the next morning. The steel face does not soak anything up, so juice, stains and smells rinse away instead of settling into the surface.
It is not a flat sheet, either. The whole panel is pressed into a raised pattern of small cubes, a textured surface built to resist scratches. It gives food a little grip under the knife and catches the light in a way that looks good on the counter between jobs.
A fruit and veg side with a juice groove
Turn it over and you have a matte, pale cream surface with fine darker flecks, made from PP plastic blended with natural plant fiber. A shallow groove runs all the way around the cutting area, so the juice from a ripe tomato or a pile of sliced oranges stays in the channel instead of running onto the counter.
Near the far end there is a small oval patch of raised bumps for rubbing a clove of garlic or a piece of ginger into a paste. Plenty of people keep this side for fruit, bread and vegetables and the steel side for meat and fish, so the two never share a surface.
A sharpener where you will actually use it
The sharpener is a small slot cut into the edge at the handle end, with a sharpening insert inside it. Draw the blade through it a few times before you start, and a knife that has gone dull gets a quick touch-up. You never have to stop and go looking for the sharpener.
The handle is a wide cut-out at the same end, easy to hook your fingers through when you carry it to the sink. A gray silicone edge runs around the whole thing, which keeps it from skating across a wet counter while you chop. Afterward, a quick rinse under the tap is usually all either side needs.
