The handles fold, and that is the whole trick

Ordinary small scissors need a sheath or a case, because the points sit exposed in whatever you drop them into. These fold the other way about. Each handle turns on its own hinge screw and lies back flat along the closed blades, so the whole tool collapses into a flat steel bar a little longer than a key.

Unfolded, they are real scissors rather than a novelty. Two straight blades on a central pivot screw, a ground cutting edge on each, and enough handle to get two fingers behind. The ends are blunt and squared rather than pointed, which is what makes them safe to carry flat and still lets them start a cut in the middle of a sheet.

There is a scale etched down one handle

One handle carries a graduated scale, numbered nought to seven with ten divisions between each number, etched along its edge rather than printed on. It is there for the small measurement you would otherwise guess at, and it costs nothing to carry because the handle exists anyway.

The other handle is plain, with two finger notches cut into its edge and a blunt rounded tip. Through the end of the ruler handle there is a plain round hole, sized for a split ring or a carabiner.

Where the cheap folding pair gives itself away

Five dollar folding scissors cut the same three corners. The handles are molded plastic that flexes under pressure, so a zip tie becomes a chewing job rather than a cut. The pivot is a hollow rivet that loosens within a month and leaves the blades passing each other with a gap. And they are made small by making the blades small, which is why the finished cut always looks torn.

This one is stainless steel throughout, blades, tangs, handles and screws. The pivot is a proper screw with a recessed head rather than a squashed rivet, and both handle hinges are screws as well. The blades meet along a ground bevel that goes through a nylon zip tie in one closing.

It goes on the key ring, gets forgotten about, and is there on the afternoon you need it.
