A slim solid wood rail that sits flat against the wall until you need it, then drops a hanger arm out into the room so a few shirts can dry or a wet coat can air on its own hanger.
Fold the arm back up when you are done and all that is left on the wall is a narrow wooden bar, a little over a foot tall, that looks like it was meant to be there.
Space when you want it, wall when you do not
A freestanding airer takes over the middle of a room for an afternoon, and a row of hooks on the back of a door crushes everything into one damp bundle. This rail does neither. The arm swings down through a quarter turn and stands straight out from the wall, giving you a proper run for hangers in a hallway, a laundry corner or beside the bedroom window.
When the clothes come off, the arm lifts back up into a slot that runs the length of the post. It lies inside the wood rather than on top of it, so the folded rail is barely deeper than the post itself and nothing sticks out for a shoulder to catch on.
Holes that keep hangers where you put them
The arm is a flat plate cut with a row of six round holes and a hook at the tip. Each hanger drops into its own hole, so the hangers stay spaced apart and do not slide together into a clump at the end of the arm. Air gets between the shirts, which is the whole point on wash day.
The holes are wide enough for ordinary wire, wooden and plastic hangers, and the spacing gives a coat or a jacket room to hang without leaning on its neighbor.
Two finishes, and one rail or a pair
Walnut pairs a deep brown post with a black arm, which sits well against warm walls, dark doors and wood furniture. Natural pairs a light wood post with a white arm, which almost disappears on a pale wall. Both are solid wood with a wax-oil finish that lets the grain show.
A single rail suits a narrow hall or one spot by the door. A set of two gives you twice the hanging space, mounted side by side for a longer run or in two different rooms, and on a busy laundry day that second arm is the one you will be glad of.
