Glitter lines on a clear shell, not paint on a colored ball

Most colored baubles are solid all the way round, so a tree full of red balls reads as blocks of red and little else. These keep the shell clear and put the color only in the pattern, as raised lines of fine glitter on the outside. From across the room the tree still reads red, green, champagne or white. Up close you see a lattice, a swirl or a spray of fronds, with the far side of the pattern showing faintly through the front.

The lattice design goes a step further. Its shell is molded into small square facets with the glitter running between them, so it throws the light back the way a cut stone does. The frond designs mix flat sequins into the glitter: gold on the red, green and champagne sets, tiny dark stars on the white.

Four colors, and each one is its own set of designs

The colors are not one pattern dyed four ways. Red pairs its lattice and fronds with loose, looping swirls, the classic choice for a green tree with warm white lights. Green is a deep, muted spruce shade with small scrolls set inside a wide net of lines, quiet on a green tree and striking on a white flocked one.

Champagne is a soft, silvery gold, and its third design of curling scrolls and fern sprigs leaves most of the shell clear, which suits a tree already dressed in gold, white or natural wood. These three have gold-toned caps. White is the only set with silver-toned caps, and its designs are its own: a sleigh motif, white trees over a frosted lower part, and white fronds with tiny star sequins. It looks best against a dark tree.

Three of each, so the tree looks planned

Nine baubles in three designs is an easy number to work with. Space one of each design around every level of the tree and the whole thing looks considered rather than filled. Two sets in different colors, red with champagne or green with white, give a bigger tree a two-tone scheme.

They work off the tree too. A few piled in a glass bowl make a centerpiece for the dining table, and hung from bare branches in a tall vase they catch the daylight in a hallway. Each cap has a wire loop for a hook or a ribbon, and at the end of the season they come down as whole as they went up.
