A deep-pile cover for a single recliner, quilted into a grid of small rounded squares that you can feel under your hand the moment you sit down. It lies over the backrest, the seat and both arms, and a pocket on the outside of one arm keeps the remote exactly where you left it.

No zips. No stretching it over the chair. No more digging down the side of the cushion.

The grid is the whole feel of it

Plenty of quilted covers are flat, with the stitching pressed into one thin layer, so what you sit on feels like a bedsheet with lines drawn across it. This one is padded and stitched into a strict grid of little domed squares, each about an inch and a half across. Over the top sits a deep, soft pile that catches a faint sheen when the light runs across it.

Look closely and every point where the lines cross carries a small knot of close stitching. That detail is what gives the surface its texture. Every edge on every piece is bound with tape in the cover's own color, so it reads as part of the chair rather than a blanket thrown over it.

The remote stays on the arm

Each arm gets its own cover, laid along the top of the arm and down both sides, leaving the rounded front of the arm as it is. On the outside of one of them, the left arm as you sit, there is a quilted pocket split into two compartments by a single seam.

The remote goes in one side and a paperback or a magazine goes in the other, and both sit right where your hand drops when you rest your arm. A small thing. It also ends the nightly search down the side of the seat, and the arguments about who had the remote last.

It goes back when you do

A recliner asks something of a cover that a sofa never does, because the chair changes shape every time you use it. The main panel is one length of almost 75 inches. That is enough to start as a short flap over the top of the headrest, run down the backrest and across the seat, and carry on down the front of the chair. Put the chair back and the panel goes with it, lying flat over the raised footrest instead of pulling up off the seat. A strap across the back of the headrest holds the top flap down.

The cover is cut for a single recliner armchair. The main panel is just under 21 inches wide, so it covers the middle of the backrest and seat and leaves the chair's own sides, its outer back and the fronts of its arms showing. That is worth knowing before you choose a color. The exact figures are in the specifications below.

If the dog has claimed the chair as well, it is the cover that collects the hair, and the cover that lifts off and goes in the machine.
